What is the FUE technique?

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure is the process of taking the follicular unit (hair roots) from the circular area one by one. The name explains the way of obtaining the hair roots.

The FUE hair transplantation technique is not an operation, unlike other hair transplantation techniques, and does not carry the same operation-related risks such as pain, wounds, infection, bleeding, opening of wounds and scarring, which are general operation risks. The patient is discharged in 1 day, and is completely recovered in a period of 1 week. Because of these characteristics and rate of success, this is the most preferred hair transplantation technique of our times. When comparing this technique to the old techniques, we can see that this technique has a much lesser rate of tissue damage and, hence, no loss of working days.

How is the FUE technique Implemented?

In this technique, the patient is firstly examined and then a detailed hair analysis is carried out.

Depending on the density of the hair roots, the number of roots (grafts) that will be transplanted into the bald area will be determined. The patient’s hair will shaved to number 1 with special shaving machines.

After the shave, hair lines are drawn out. With these, the hair transplantation operation is planned and the areas from which to take hair roots and the number of hair roots to be taken, as well as the areas to which hair roots will be transplanted and the number of hair roots to be transplanted is determined.

When choosing the circular area from where the hair roots are going to be taken, the areas that are genetically programmed not to fall out are chosen.

After choosing the circular area, local anaesthesia will be given to the patient. The hair roots in this area are taken with a device called a micro motor, and the hair root, together with a piece of tissue beside it, in a cylindrical manner, towards the direction of exit of the hair, in 1 millimetres of diameter and approximately 12-14 millimetres of deepness. The roots are not transplanted into straight incisions, but rather, into round holes opened with thin needles.

A thin hole is opened for each root, and the hair grafts are separated into groups according to the amount of hair roots they contain. The root is placed in its place, and then a hole is opened for another roots, and the root is placed inside the round holes that have been opened.

These holes are suitable to the natural structure of the root itself.

To minimize the harm that the grafts will undergo during the operation, the duration has been reduced thanks to this automatic system, and the amount of grafts taken per unit of time has been increased.

Depending on the number of roots obtained and the amount of baldness, it is possible to transplant 50 to 60 hair roots per square centimetre.

No incision or stitching is made on the area from where the hair roots are taken. Small-scale scratches are caused in the area where the roots are taken from, and these will close within a few days and recover without leaving any scars. The average number of roots taken in one session depends on the state of the area from where they are to be taken, and depending on the number of roots, 4,000 to 6,000 roots can be taken.

Every hair root has between 1 and 3 hair strands. 1 graft is generally accepted as 2 to 2.5 hair strands on average. The same technique can easily be used for the eyebrows, moustache and beard transplantations and yield good results.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of the FUE Technique

FUE Technique Advantages

  • In the FUE technique, the amount of hair roots to be obtained is higher than in other techniques.
  • In the the FUE technique, a device with a thin tip, called a Fue motor, is used to make the transplantation, and in this manner, the transplantation process will be completed more quickly.
  • No incision or stitching is made in the area where the hair is taken from. Small-scale scratches of less than 06,07 millimetres are caused in the area where the roots are taken from, and these will close within a few days and recover without leaving any scars.
  • After the transplantation, there is less pain and the recovery period is much shorter.
  • The FUE hair transplantation technique is not an operation, unlike other hair transplantation techniques, and does not carry the same operation-related risks such as pain, wounds, infection, bleeding, opening of wounds and scarring, which are general operation risks.
  • Because hair transplantation in the Fue technique gives the hair strands the desired angles of exit, it achieves the most natural appearance.

Its Disadvantages

  • The grafts are taken with the micro motor device at certain speeds, and if the rotation speed of this machine is not adjusted properly, the hair roots can be damaged and hair roots may never form again in this area. For this reason, your doctor must be an expert and experienced.
  • In terms of cost , it is more expensive than the other alternatives.
  • The FUE technique is not one that can be implemented on everyone. Before applying this technique, certain tests must be made.you can find out more about The right candidate for hair transplant
